Department of Landscape, Spatial and Infrastructure Sciences; Institute of Landscape
Development, Recreation and Conservation Planning (ILEN)
Founded in 1872, the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences,
Vienna, also known by its acronym "BOKU", now comprises 13 departments and four
service centres in Vienna, as well as a number of experimental centres around Vienna.
The university has approximately 5000 students (of whom 15% are international),
providing courses at undergraduate, master and doctorate levels. It has around 700
permanent teaching staff who are also engaged in research, a broad range of external
lecturers and some 430 persons working in services and administration.
The university
sees itself as a teaching and research institution focusing on renewable resources
that are a prerequisite for human existence. The relationships between man, society
and the environment form the basis of all activities at BOKU and its foremost aim
is to make a decisive contribution to securing the well-being of future generations.
In this endeavour, it will seek ways of ensuring the sustainable and environmentally
sound management of natural resources by bringing together the competencies of natural,
engineering, economic and social sciences.
As a key player in tourism and recreation
research, our institute has extensive experience in the field of implementation,
management, marketing and monitoring of sustainable tourism concepts. The development
of tourism strategies which are both compatible with nature conservation and socially
acceptable has been the subject of several research and consulting projects in the
last decade. We provide the scientific background to concepts regarding sustainable
tourism and governance models for local development. In this way we help to draw
up suitable management models for villages undergoing conversion, orienting them
towards sustainable tourism strategies.
