The Forchheim administrative district (Landkreis Forchheim) is situated in
northern Bavaria in the heart of Franconia. Around 114,000 people live in this
district in the Nuremberg-Fürth-Erlangen areas and the upper Franconian cities
of Bamberg and Bayreuth.
The economy of the area is distinguished by a varied economic structure. More
than 2,200 companies in the industrial, retail and craft sectors, as well as
many businesses in the service sector, provide about 23,500 jobs. The A73
federal motorway, the main Danube Canal and the main Berlin-Munich railway line,
which crosses the region from north to south, in addition to the international
airport in Nuremberg, guarantee excellent transport links.
The specific characteristics of the Forchheim region are the recreational and
tourist possibilities offered by the unique landscape of “Franconian
Switzerland” (“Fränkische Schweiz”). The “lowlands” with the valleys along the
rivers Regnitz, Wiesent and Aisch, as well as the “highlands” of Franconian
Switzerland provide ideal possibilities for leisure, sports and tourist
activities. Europe's largest sweet cherry growing area is located here and large
parts of the landscape are protected, having been given the status of nature
park.
However, there are attractive rural areas with undeveloped potential for
sustainable tourism which have been severely hit by demographic change. Hence
the support of innovative players and rural businesses in villages, in addition
to the reinforcement of the regional economy through exchanging of European
experience, cooperation and training are important aims of Landkreis Forchheim
within the context of the LISTEN project.
