The role of the České Švýcarsko (Bohemian Switzerland) public service organisation is to support sustainable development of the Bohemian Switzerland region. This rural area of outstanding natural beauty lies in the northernmost part of the Czech Republic; close to the Elbe Sandstones protected landscape area (Czech name: Labské Pískovce) and the Lusatian Mountains (Czech name: Lužické hory). Together with the Saxon Switzerland National Park on the German side, the Bohemian Switzerland National Park makes up a cross-border tourist region, offering opportunities for relaxation in a unique and uncontaminated natural environment.
The organisation supports the environmental development of the region based on the protection of natural and cultural values and the economic development of the region based on environmentally friendly tourism and positive presentation. České Švýcarsko also supports the social development of the region based on knowledge and education. These objectives are being achieved by implementing basic programmes involving multiple projects.
The České Švýcarsko public service organisation was founded on 17 October 2001. Its creation was a response to the absence of an organisation coordinating and initiating activities extending beyond individual nature conservation projects and regional development bodies and entities. Such coordination is a prerequisite for balanced development of a region such as Bohemian Switzerland, where nature conservation is so important.
The České Švýcarsko public service organisation has received many prizes and awards for its publications, websites and catalogue (2004 Photographic Publication of the Year, Most Beautiful Czech Book of 2003, Best Website of 2004, best calendar and tourist poster of the Czech Republic in 2006, Best Tourism Products of the Czech Republic in 2007 and 2008, Grand Prix Regiontour 2007).
